I enjoy speaking to readers and writers of all ages and working with them at schools, libraries, and writers events. I also enjoy sharing my experiences with grown-ups at professional meetings and conferences, family literacy nights, and writing workshops. I love to present at festivals and book celebrations that promote literacy, and I take great pleasure in talking about my books, the writing process, the publishing industry, writing as a career, and best practices in literacy education. My goals are to inform, inspire, educate, and entertain, and I want young people and adults alike to come away from my presentations with a renewed excitement for reading, writing, and changing the world one word at a time.
Authors Kids Love: Stories Behind the Stories, is a dynamic multimedia program that takes students and educators behind the scenes of the making of the series. Hear the stories behind the stories of some of your favorite award-winning authors, and find out how the series was conceived and developed. In addition, students will learn about doing research, conducting interviews, and reading and writing biographies. I also show them how an author study can deepen their understanding of the literature they love.
To ensure a meaningful and productive school visit, teachers can lay the groundwork before I come and build on it after I leave. Students should know who I am, why I am coming to speak to them, and something about the subjects of my books. It would be good to share my books with them in advance and have copies of each title in your school library. The Authors Kids Love books are appropriate for a wide range of readers and writers. Although the series is aimed at fluent middle grade readers, they can be used successfully with emergent and developing readers of all ages. Students can either read the books themselves or the books can be read aloud and discussed. Students should also be familiar with some of the books written by the authors in the series. Each biography includes a list of the authors books. Click here for teaching resources.
